yeah, sorry i meant what the other david said...

you can also do this:

<?php $formatted_date = format_date($node->created, 'custom', 'D M d Y'); ?>


<?php echo $formatted_date; ?>

so that you can keep all the processing stuff in one place in the 
document and then only put the echoed variables inline with the html.
