[development] GSoC student proposal question

Hello all. Prospective student here. I have some ideas for features I'd like to implement into Drupal, but I have a quick question before I present my proposal: if the community finds my ideas better suited for a module separate from the core distribution, can it still be accepted as a GSoC project? Or are mentors only interested in core features/improvements? Thank you, Casey
