Here is a related topic: We discussed why poll should/should not be removed, and what happened to queue, and potentially others. In another thread Derek asked why core has modules at all. This goes back to the install profiles (bundles, preconfigured sets, whatever you want to call them) discussions. We can have a profile called "default" or "basic" or "community" and it could contain the modules currently in core (assigned to one or more maintainers). This has the benefit of slimming core even more and making it more into framework/API than a "blogging package" or "CMS package".
