Look at the module page, then click on CVS messages. Now you see the latest changes in the module. If a module was changed months ago, it is not likely maintained (or too perfect :). You can also get these messages as RSS channels (look for the orange icon at the bottom). Goba
It would be quite useful to us newbies to know in some systematic way, like on the Modules download page or details page for each module, which ones are actively maintained and which abandoned. Where can one find the dated list of patches affecting each module?

i'm abandoning this one. It provides bulk upload and some gallery support. Bulk upload is now provided elsewhere and album's gallery is not worth saving (uses the abandoned folksonomy.module to group image nodes and taxonomy.module for display - i.e. provides nothing on its own).
folks are encouraged to use other gallery modules or build a new module.
