EXACTLY!
This is a very big hammer to be raising. I'm not sure what the effects will be (I don't think anyone can, even Google, until it actually starts to effect changes). I *am* interested to flip ahead to the end of this story. May be the single biggest change in Google PR/Internet traffic in history.
How big a hammer is this really? It would only affect comment posts. If people post links of interest in a new forum post - or new story - or any new node - the links are live. A couple of things to keep in mind. 1) Its not just google on board here - MSN and Yahoo are on board too (96+% of all internet search).
In any case...if someone wants to implement, great -- please, just not in core, or allow it to be turned off.
2) All major blogging software are implementing this feature as part of their core as of now. They are already on board. Yes fine - allow it to be turned off - but if its not in core to begin with it might be the one feature that stops a person from make a switch to a more powerful, better, greater, faster, awesome Drupal. 3) This story has already spread through the blogsphere - the idea has VERY heavy penetration - just do a quick google on "rel=nofollow" - Bloggers everywhere are talking about it - and will be looking for it. Ignoring this would be a mistake. andre
