[development] Functions for Creating Index Pages?

Hi everyone, I havn't been able to find any functions that would create an index page (such as the front page, or taxonomy/term/n) -- can anyone give me a shove in the right direction regarding which functions/proceedures to look at? I would use the taxonomy option but it's not appropriate for this project as i need a custom page title not "term 1, term2, term3" for the node type.
