Opsie, what I suggested is multisite. Don't forget that multisite, while good could be a pain for upgrades. The code upgrade is easy, but the database upgrades of a bunch of sites are a pain.

At the moment we don't have an upgrade approach for that, just a set of floating rumors how to do it easily, so that we minimise downtime. The various softlink farms, etc... When suggesting and deciding on a change we need to consider such approaches, so that drupal is easily 'farmable'. Hosting providers will love us for that.
