Maybe I'm not fully aware of alternative methods but I would hate to see multiple parents disappear from Drupals taxonomy system.
Agreed. I am more than aware of the technical challenges but "challenges exist only to solve them". It's not a solution to say "doh this is complex, rip it out!".
