Aron is starting to pull these apart and is doing some benchmarking and feature comparisons http://groups.drupal.org/node/4519 http://groups.drupal.org/node/4547 I know he's putting some real time into this the next few weeks, and one idea is a pluggable parser - so you could have one for php4, one for php5, something using simpleXML, another using simplepie.
