V, Start by creating roles and assigning privileges under administer >> access control in the admin interface. Hopefully you'll find everything you need there and you won't have to modify the database by hand. The node_access table only comes into play when you enable a module that uses it (i.e. Taxonomy Access Control). When such a module is enabled, the node_access table makes it possible to grant privileges on a node-by-node basis.
