Static expands to fill the space alloted. I must say we'd be lost without our naming convention (good old fashioned hhg2g), but that's really only practical in a small team of folks that are dedicated to a hosting function. Naming conventions make for good shorthand when you can personify your hosts with "what, marvin's down *again*?!* But when you've got lots of hosts doing lots of functions, and/or you have multiple, transient volunteer administrators, numeric conventions are easier to learn and reference. It might be practical to extend that convention to all the drupal host functions though, database included. ( db1 or database1 rather than database). This has bitten us in the past.
