I think that one of the most important ways one can evaluate the health of a community is the degree to which it follows its own rules. I've just recently joined this list. As an "outsider" looking in, it seems like the decision to rollback the patch is a mature decision that strengthens the fabric of Drupal's development community/culture even as it delays some important developments in the platform.
