What I can do if people are interested is help in securing funding for some people to do it. I don't know the drupal politics around this, but I believe this job may simply be too large and complex to pull off with a volunteer effort.
Hurray, the voice of reason! Indeed, part of why this hasn't already happened is that none of this is my full time job, I don't feel *that* strongly about it as a personal itch, and to date, the volunteer resources brought to the table have been insufficient to drive it home. Jakob made a heroic effort as a Summer of Code project last year, but that wasn't enough. We've done these sorts of fundraising efforts for various d.o infrastructure functionality in the past (e.g. the initial push for the release system itself, etc), and we'll do more of them in the future (big scale for the d.o redesign, small scale for things like a system for packaging up installation profiles with a copy of core and all the modules they require, and hopefully the D6 upgrade of d.o, etc). So yes, if you want to raise money to help fund the "remove dependencies on CVS and pave the way for XXX" effort, please do so. It will definitely help. Thanks, -Derek (dww)
