"Is this a bug?" type questions
I have been reading this dev list for 18 months now, and I am still not 100% sure what questions will get you slapped down. I particularly wonder about questions like Carl Mc Dade just asked - ei: I am writing code that interacts with the core modules and found an unexpected behavior - is it a bug or intentional? I have interacted with other open source projects in the past where they got very upset if I filed an issue in ignorance, so I like to research before I file. Is this list an appropriate place for that research, or is this list intended to be only for developers working on the core? thanks, -tao
I might be wrong on this, but from my view is the list primary intended for core development. Secondly for generic topics through the entire Drupal module universe and heavy modules (think CCK, category or views). Thirdly comes the rest, which I would personally like to see more of in the future. Another way to choose appropriate list is to ask yourself the following questions: 1) Is it drupal.org-related? 1a) Is it the documentation? documentation@drupal.org 1b) Otherwise it's probably webmasters@drupal.org or infrastructure@drupal.org 2) DrupalCon? drupal-con@drupal.org 3) Does it involve dealing with clients or business in general? consulting@drupal.org 4) Is your topic about theming? themes@drupal.org 5) Is it about how to customize your site? support@drupal.org 6) Will it result in code? Will someone else find that code useful? development@drupal.org 7) Will it lead to discussion or an announcement touching Drupal core? development@drupal.org 8) support@drupal.org Once again, I'm likely to be wrong on this. <http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/iclk?sa=l&ai=Brj1U33nPRbzuIpeaiQSWkdTUB-T4tguwi7GJA8CNtwHg1AMQAxgDIIaPgAIoBDAAOABQ0aXrmgdg8a38haQfmAHD1YICoAGy3bn-A6oB5AFBY2NvdW50QWdlMTIwdG9JbmZpbml0eStFbnRpcmVBZENsaWNrYWJsZUNvbnRyb2wrRmlyc3RNZXNzYWdlVHlwZVRleHQrTG9jYWxlX2VuK05hbWVEZXRlY3Rpb25WZXJ0aWNhbFdvcmQrTnVtTWVzc2FnZXMxK1JhZGxpbmtzUmhzUGFnZUJlbG93K1NlbmRlckRvbWFpbl91bmNhdGVnb3JpemVkK1N3aXRjaEJvdHRvbUFkc0NvbnRyb2wrVGllcjArVXNlTmVnYXRpdmVSZXJvdXRpbmdUcnVlK1ZpZXdfQ1ayAQlnbWFpbC5jb23IAQHaATBodHRwOi8vZ21haWwuY29tL3NvdHF6YWFpbzZ2bzBoYXV5NGIyMTd1aWg0ZzhiZ3SAAgGoAwE&num=3&adurl=http://good-child-guide.com/link.php%3Fpage%3Dgcd.php%26track%3Dgcd> On 2/11/07, Tao Starbow <starbow@citris-uc.org> wrote:

IMO the slapping down was probably a little premature, and if you believe it's on topic, go ahead and ask; and if someone slaps you down, apologize and move on and just keep in mind that many of us (self included) are a little quick with the Slap Down button. =)

Also note that contributing means that you won't slapped down or much less. At least from me. But probably from others too. Regards NK

This is a very important point that new open source developers dont seem to get right out of the gate. Your contributions to the project in their various forms contribute to some unknown attribute that we'll call "karma". The more karma you have the more anyone that has been involved with the project for sometime will be willing to help you out, etc. Just because you see someone else ask something similar doesn't necessarily mean your question will be treated with the same warmth and acceptance. If all you ever do is take pennies from the change tray don't be angry if you get dirty looks from time to time. Oh and dont touch the Jar. Tao, This is a list for Drupal development. If you have a question about how to code Drupal, be it core or contrib, your question is appropriate here. You do yourself (and everyone else) a favor if you do your own research into the matter (search the list archives, Google, IRC) before posting to the list. You do yourself and everyone a favor if you don't get personal, if you take what others say with a grain of salt, and if you refuse to get baited into arguments. You do yourself and everyone else a favor if you look past responses that obviously reveal personal grudges, past histories, and trivial distractions. If you ask a question, and one person gives a helpful answer, does it really matter how many other people try to slap you down? Some people on this list are very very bad at separating content from rhetoric. Others lack a sense of proportion when writing in a foreign language. All of us are united, more or less, in our goal. There is no need to pretend that the devel list is a *fun* place to be. But if you use it for asking development related questions and giving development related answers, AND NOTHING ELSE, it will serve its purpose. -Robert PS I found Carl's question interesting and hope the matter is pursued.
