[drupal-devel] Drupal Setup
Hello, Is there a reason for the fact that Drupal does not have an installer right now? If there are no principle objections, I'd like to get started on writing one. Feel free to reply with you 'setup' demands and views. Regards, Ariejan de Vroom
There is an installer for CivicSpace (a Drupal distribution). Someone (was it adrian?) is working on an installer. Please coordinate with them. See the archives of this mailing list at lists.drupal.org On 9/29/05, Ariejan de Vroom <ariejan@gmail.com> wrote:

1. People don't have time. 2. There were several fundamental things introduced which will help the install works. 3. CivicSpace already has an installer. 4. Some people already work on an installer. Goba

Experienced people don't need it, inexperienced people can't write it.

There is an ongoing attempt by Neil to write one. He is coming to Amsterdam to tell us about it. I suggest you don't duplicate his effort, but come to Amsterdam and discuss it with him. Cheers, Gerhard

And from that fact comes most usability problems, particularly in open source. :-) --Larry Garfield

The reason this is a slow process is that apart from dependecies, there are fundamental security related problems with an installer bundled with drupal. They are not easy to solve at all, especially when you consider the different possible drupal deployment strategies. Vlado

Yep. I'm concentrating on an updater for this release. The installation system will be next. -Neil

We're preparing the Drupal 4.7 release. As such we're mostly interested in (i) bug fixes, (ii) usability improvements and (iii) performance improvements. So if you're looking for a task, I'd be happy to assign you one. Basically, have a look at http://drupal.org/node/31896#comment-55591 (or the entire thread) and pick a number. Not on that list are doing some performance comparisons between Drupal 4.6 and the forthcoming Drupal 4.7 (HEAD) release. We need to know if there are performance implications. Build you site in Drupal 4.6, benchmark the page generation time of various pages, upgrade to Drupal CVS HEAD, and do the same benchmarks again. Report the numbers. -- Dries Buytaert :: http://www.buytaert.net/
