OT: Drupal user and contributor 'alaa' has been arrested
Possibly stale news to some, but alaa [1] was arrested [2] [3][4] a few days ago. Perhaps drupal.org can help out with a (front-page?) story to drum up some support and exposure? -K [1] http://drupal.org/user/8991/ [2] http://www.manalaa.net/ [3] http://politics.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/08/1054237 [4] http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=alaa&btnG=Search+News
Wow, that is some sad news. Alaa has contributed some nice modules for us. The first step is for someone to write an article on drupal.org - then the editors can decide if it merits more promotion. On 5/11/06 12:58 PM, "Karthik" <narakasura@gmail.com> wrote:

Please blog this! I fully understand if drupal.org hesitates, but all of us ought to take the 5 minutes to blog it, and spreading the word. Alaa has done what we all should do. He speaks up for democracy and freedom of speech. That is very much what Drupal and especially CivicSpace is all about. We all contributed to the proliferation of democracy. Now one of our peers is in prison for doing what we believe everyone of us should do. Please take action! best Gunnar http://www.langemark.com/egypt

My fingers are itching to make this a drupal.org frontpage. But... I never yet made any post a drupal.org frontpage myself. And I am a bit afraid that, by following my political guts in this, I ban myself, rather then add to the political mission. I would love Dries, Robin, or even Kieran speaking up in this matter. After all: A respected member of our contributors team has spoken up, has proved his Drupal spirit, and was arrested for it. When was it that Drupal ducked for people speaking ou their minds? I cannot recall a single incidence! Bèr

Well I posted to the CivicSpace list immediately after I saw it. So I say open source is about freedom and he was protesting for freedom and backing it up with code submissions to our community. It's front page worthy in my opinion. I just wish i could find the paypal link to support as it would probably drive some badly needed funds his way. Kieran

I promoted zens story to frontpage If anybody finds that wrong, they can go in and demote it. best Gunnar Kieran Lal wrote:

I demoted it and I am sad that it took an hour. Who are you (or I am) to decide in this? If anything than Kieran's post would be FP worthy.
It's just sad to see the silence of all you guys. There has been a discussion. Nobody really took part. I said in an earlier post that I could fully understand the hesitance of drupal.org to take part in a political campaign. However Alaa is "rotting in his cell", and I'm not sitting back doing nothing about it. So I promoted it to see who would take action. You did. So let that be part of the discussion. Who are you to demote it? ;-) No bad feelings I hope. Gunnar Karoly Negyesi wrote:

You were not on IRC when we discussed this and also I had a lengthy discussion with him about this in private. As far as I am concerned, this is to be decided by Dries and only him. So to answer your question, I am not Dries and you are neither and that's why I demoted it.
That's ok Karoly I was not on IRC that's correct. Please when you make decisions on IRC - regarding important matters like this - let the decisions spread by the lists as well. I'm in no position to follow everything all the time. Sorry if I goofed up. So what's going to happen? What are you guys going to do? (I'll be leaving in 5 minutes so will only be back in around 8 hours or so) Best Gunnar Karoly Negyesi wrote:

IRC is not an official communication channel. The mailing lists are.

I say we demote it. This is exactly the kind of thing you should post on your weblogs, but not on the drupal.org front page. -- Dries Buytaert :: http://www.buytaert.net/

Exactly. I think an easy rule of thumb is, if it's not primarily about Drupal, then it should only be promoted after a discussion (not promoted and then demoted). And that discussion should likely take place on the infrastructure list. -- Boris
