Hello world, I talked to Gabor this morning and we decided we're going to release a third Drupal 6 beta on Wednesday. We also decided that this should probably be the last beta release. Hence, it is extremely likely (but not guaranteed) that we're going to have a first release candidate (RC) after Drupal 6 beta 3. I figured I'd share this information ahead of time, so we can slowly get into "RC mode" and become more strict about what pending issues we flag as "critical". It also means that there isn't a whole lot of time left for usability improvements. Thanks, -- Dries Buytaert :: http://www.buytaert.net/

Here are the release notes I crafted based on CVS logs and text from the beta 2 announcement. Anyone interested to improve/fix, please edit and submit with 'create new revision' checked. Again, this node is in full HTML format, so only users with this level of permission can improve it: http://drupal.org/drupal-6.0-beta3 Please leave unpublished of course. Gabor
Please excuse my ignorance, but after the whole taxonomy/category discussion I wondered why the new "Split summary at cursor" button uses the word summary instead of teaser. Everywhere else in Drupal it's called teaser.
+1 good catch. Also a "summary" doesn't describe what it is at all. shai On 11/19/07, Gaele Strootman <eindgebruiker@gmail.com> wrote:

If you check the "Show summary in full view" checkbox, then it is a teaser, otherwise it is a summary. Look in the original issue where it was introduced. Gabor
Gabor, First -- the functionality you describe sounds absolutely wonderful -- awesome! I was unable to find the original issue. I just updated to the latest Drupal 6 head and I can't find the "Show summary in full view" checkbox. I thought it would be on node/add or in the post settings. Where is it? Is "summary" now its own field? Shai Presumably if the summary field is left blank, Drupal will auto generate a teaser as in the past based on the settings at: admin/content/node-settings On 11/19/07, Gábor Hojtsy <gabor@hojtsy.hu> wrote:

Well, instead of presuming, just try how it works. Push the split button, see another text field appear, see the check box. It is good to do this homework before weighting on the issue :) http://www.drupal.org/node/107061 Gabor

And how many random new users are going to "do their homework" and read a closed issue thread before using Drupal? If it's confusing for people on this list (*raises his hand*), it's going to be even worse for the "man on the street" user. --Larry Garfield

I think most users try and (optionally) fail. I was not saying how it is called is correct now, multiple people suggested to open a new issue. I provided backround on why is it as it is, so there is a ground to start from, instead of restarting the whole debate from zero again. This is a development list and I have given development advice, not user advice. Gabor
Gabor, I do humbly apologize :) 126 "follow-ups" on that thread..., so I can't imagine there is another opinion to be said that wasn't said back then. The new functionality is fantastic. The UI is good, once you understand how it works. The terminology is iffy. But certainly at this point, after all that discussion that went on in April -- this is what it is. I'll volunteer to help with a handbook page if it hasn't already been written. Shai On 11/19/07, Gábor Hojtsy <gabor@hojtsy.hu> wrote:

Hmmm, the functionality behind it may be an improvement, but the user-interface is not correct yet. - "Split summary at cursor" should either be "Split body at cursor" or something like "Split off summary at cursor". Because that is what the button does. - Once clicked the summary field is labeled "Body". The body field has no label. - I don't get this: if I check "Show summary in full view" then it isn't a summary anymore. This is inconsistent. I will look into this and try to come up with something better. Should I reopen the original issue or create a new one? Gaele
create a new issue please. do read the existing one as the UI was debated at length .. .thanks for minding the details :) On 11/19/07, Gaele Strootman <eindgebruiker@gmail.com> wrote:

New issue. In the new issue you can reference the original one and preferably summarize. But at this point you are talking a change in wording. As this is one of those issues with strong opinions, it may be an interesting one. Steven On Nov 19, 2007 12:11 PM, Gaele Strootman <eindgebruiker@gmail.com> wrote:

I figured I'd share this information ahead of time, so we can slowly get into "RC mode" and become more strict about what pending issues we flag as "critical". It also means that there isn't a whole lot of time left for usability improvements. A few questions:
a) Can usability improvements still be submitted prior to RC1, or do they stop at Beta 3? As in, do we have another 2 days for usability improvements or more like 2+ weeks? I ask because there is a lot of energy/activity around this area right now, particularly after Chris Messina's review, and I feel it'd be a shame to stifle these efforts right at their peak. b) String freeze is also at RC1. Obviously, RC1 will be done when it's done. ;) But could we communicate to the docs/translations team to have one final look-over of all the text in core by, say, Dec. 10, and/or could we pick some other arbitrary "safe" date that's relatively in the vicinity of when you estimate you'll be wanting to ship a RC1? c) Could you describe how "RC mode" differs from "beta mode," for some of our newer contributors who might have not been around to experience a release of Drupal before? Where should efforts be focused in particular in order to get an RC out the door? -Angie
