[support] file path aliases i'm confused

I would like to have my files link look something like Example.com/dl/category/filename I've read about the filepath module have that installed and just read about the filealiase module and I'm just not getting it. I hate to move things around and have a mess of over 500 files on my hands. Could anyone help? I'd like to let drupal alias this and not the server itself since I do have pathologic module installed too. Thanks.
