Some great suggestions here. One of the best ways to learn Drupal is to join a local DUG. Check Drupal.org for a group near you. Also while lynda.com is great take a look at buildamodule.com too. I am a a total newbie with Drupal, too. Two things helped me grasp the concepts. One is having an experienced Drupal developer friend who has been patient with my million questions; the other was taking the course(s) on lynda.com so I could get some hands on experience with their exercise files.
