[drupal-support] Overriding theme causing problems with static variables

I've overridden the aggregator_page_item function, responsible for displaying rss items on the /aggregator page. I overrode using the phptemplate theme. The function uses a static variable called $last. But apparently, the act of overriding the theme function renders static variables useless. The $last variable gets reset every time the function is called.
