I built a magazine's site on top of Drupal. http://www.snowboard-mag.com Another high-profile magazine-like site that uses Drupal is The Onion. http://www.theonion.com It really boils down to how much customization you need. Drupal does fairly well out-of-the-box for handling a publishing paradigm/model, and the hundreds of available modules often fulfill the majority of your functional needs.
