Either cygwin (explained on this Drupal page: http://drupal.org/node/32875) or another cool alternative are the UnxUtils (http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/), which sets you up with a special shell also, and is easier to install. Can anyone tell me a free program that can be used to apply patch files under Windows? There's a page in the drupal handbook about this but none of the programs seemed to work.

Thanks,
John
