[support] managing subscriptions

Hello, I'm considering to set up a community site with organic groups, forums, newsletters, etc. What is the best way to set up a set of users to receive forum messages (& comments) by mail, so it acts like a traditional mailing list ? I read about a 'subscription' module that lets individual users subscribe to nodes. Is there a way to manage subscriptions from a central place, i.e. as a forum moderator / admin ?
