i am reading that chapter right now and light bulbs turn on right and left. I also ordered the whole book. Wow, this should really be recommended to everyone (who is like me anyway).

Since you are already using phptemplete callbacks, you are a theming ninja. Atleast Pro Drupal Development's authors think so :-)
One other thing, if i follow what you said, i.e. drop block-user-0.tpl.php into the theme folder, wouldn't i have to define a callback somewhere?
