You might want to look at the TR module (its in contrib - not sure why 
its not getting out to the downloads page - i'm not the owner - rob 
ellis is) - it needs to be updated to 4.7/head - and there is room for 
TR to somehow merge with i18n - BUT - its a great tool for having a 
translated version of every page on your site... and also handles 
taxonomy term translations, menus and other things.

This from a Canadian that understands very well the need for bi/multi 
lingual sites.
