Flexinode, CCK, and such are edge cases.  I was able to add Views support to 
nodereview when writing it in about 3 hours, I think, and that was a year ago 
before I fully groked what Views was or why it is cool. :-)  It was 3 hours 
well-spent, however. 

However, the dependency on many contrib modules is a valid concern, and is one 
reason why I do encourage relying on Views and CCK and a few other "key" 
swiss-army-knife modules.  It's then that many fewer modules that you need to 
write/maintain/wait for an upgrade on, and that many fewer module maintainers 
you need to periodically bribe. :-)
