Forking vs. Patching is NOT a development issue from a client's
perspective. It's a support issue. If they want to pay for a one-shot
deal and get a site up and running, they shouldn't have to absorb the
costs of integrating code changes into drupal/contrib. If, however, they
want ongoing support, the time that it takes to get their features into
the drupal ecosystem pays off in higher quality code, better support,
and a larger number of 'hands' making sure that their features will work
with any future changes to the system.

At least, that's the way I look at it.
