Superwoman ...

I would strongly advise that you put together a thorough RFP in which you
detail the requirements of the project, pointing to sites that offer the
features that you want to see on your site, and post it somewhere like on a
google doc that you can point people to. That way you'll get a lot of eyes
looking over the project, and you'lll be much more likely to get contacted
by developers who are ready and capable of handling what your project
requires. Surely, after hiring 4 developers and giving them the down
payment to start work, you must have a very clear vision of the project,
right?

Another thing to consider ... If you still don't have a clear project
proposal, detailing all of the deliverables, then before you pay the 50%
down, you may want to start the process by paying someone an hourly
consultation rate until they provide you with evidence that they have a
clear vision for what your website will be. That will give both of you time
to assess each other while not making a large commitment. By the time the
developer is ready to begin real design and/or development work, you'll know
how good their communication skills are and whether they really understand
the needs of your project.

Good luck.

Michael
