Try checking the MySQL max_allowed_packet, some installation are defaulted
to 1MB, which could be too low if there are a lot of data such as locale or
cck. This one likely will not show up in your webserver log.

Alternatively, enable PHP log_errors and set the error_log to see more
errors.
