Great examples. Also to stress Occys point. 
Just look at the next-prev witget. yup. standard. core.
 Yes its themable, but no, its not easy. Not at all.

So, yes, Drupal is extremely powerfull for themeing, but, its not transparant 
enough, nor is it consistent in that flexibility. 

Another example is /aggregator I have never come across a drupal site that 
made something nice looking out of that, something that fits into the rest of 
the site better then the default pages. 

Same for search. http://www.newsphoto.nl/search/node/Lennon was a very hard 
one to do. Its a theme function of over 100 lines! and it performs horrible.
