I wonder why the table headers don't wrap ... we'd save a lot of  
space if they would.  Take a look at the attached screenshot.  I  
know, it still doesn't scale up to 10+ roles but it certainly  
improves the current situation and might be straightforward to  
implement with some CSS.  It would certainly do the trick for the  
majority of all Drupal sites.
