Lots of separate patches that make permissions more fine-grained in various 
areas, but no mega-patch that I know of.

More-fine-grained-permission patches keep getting accepted, so my conclusion 
is that it's an accepted direction to be moving.

Yes! :-)

I've previously stated that there are 7 CRUD permissions: Create, View, View 
Own, Edit, Edit Own, Delete, Delete Own.  With dynamic types from node 
module, it should be quite feasible to provide that full set to all 
node-module-based nodes for D6.  (Completely custom nodes are largely on 
their own currently, and I'm not sure how to change that other than leading 
by example.)
