It seems to me that it is too late, from the argument presented.

Let us learn a lesson, and not do this in the future. Any major
release should have a new major number, whether the changes
are visible or not.

Users keep mixing modules by mistake all the time, then ask
why they break.

It would be nice to have a guideline for release numbers with APIs
not breaking between point releases, but do break between major ones.

Just some thoughts for the future.
