I agree. For all my pique in firing off that list, I think it would be a
mistake to simply pull stuff out of core *without* all the pieces in
place (install profiles, etc) to make the transition smooth.

Yes, that's my thinking too.  We have a long way to go.  Let's focus  
on getting the install system in first.
