And we do have an XMLRPC-based authentication scheme, and I do believe there 
is an LDAP module as well.  There is a lot of interest in single-signon and 
other shared authentication schemes for Drupal.  I believe Bèr Kessels also 
wrote a module which allow Drupal to simply use another database/table for 
authentication, as well.
