Thanks for the follow-up, Scott.  Now I do understand.

I agree; it's not a call back at all.  It's much closer to the hook
system, but with significant enough differences that it is not a hook,
either.  I had the same confusion you did regarding these 2 different
things which are called hook_*().

Finding a really good name would be helpful, but likewise may be
(already is?) challenging.
