FWIW, my one experience with XCache was it crashing mysteriously for 5 hours before the host we were dealing with turned it off and our Drupal site started miraculously working.  We have another client that was running, I think, either eAccelerator or Zend's opcode cache and it's been running fine since last fall.

I am but a single data point.
