I agree with George. As far as more advanced integration, that really 
depends on what you are wanting to do. Drupal is used heavily in 
government sites (including congressional). You might want to take a 
look at openpublic for some ideas:

For data, there is also the Sunlight Foundation module, which pulls in 
data from the numerous API's Sunlight Foundation offers:
