Boris is right. The configuration wizard/install profile system that
Adrian has been working on is what you'll need. I created the first
"unofficial" drupaled about two years ago. It was the configuration I
was using with other teachers for classroom use. However, Drupal can be
used for many other uses in education other than just the classroom, and
we'll need profiles to accomplish this.
At the same time, you could also begin building your profiles by
creating base sites for some various different uses to get a feel for
what configurations they would need. And it will probably help to create
"best practices" documentation for using those profile sites.
