Of course this all depends on who you talk to ;-)

To many core developers it is all about making drupal easier to develop 
for.  Scalability, reliability, modularity, performance etc.  Keeping in 
mind that at the end of the day - 'average' users will want to use this 
thing.

For many others - its about the end product... what more can you do with 
each new release.  And many don't see nor care about the benefits of the 
development platform - they just want a feature rich CMS that works.

Of course both of these are the same thing.  A desire for Drupal world 
domination - by far the best in class of CMS.  Its just the short term 
view that differs.
