My main point is that if you try to configure the database or the
sites directory first - you have no way of testing whether or not you
did it properly as you need the pointing stuff working to be able to
test it. It is like a prerequisite step for multisite.

If you configure the pointing step first, you can test whether or not
that step was done right before adding other variables to the
equation.

An important troubleshooting technique (for anything) is breaking
things down into individual testable parts and only changing one thing
at once.

Without that, you have too many variables to try at once and
troubleshooting just ends up as random guesswork or voodoo.
