Valuable is an understatement.  I'd say mandatory.  In addition to 
reasons I just recently posted, a good video needs a script - not actual 
dialogue, but enough to identify every point that should be covered, in 
order of presentation.  Few people can talk extemporaneously for any 
length and have it come out with the polish and coherence needed for a 
video.  And once you have a script like that, you already have the 
outline of the tutorial, which is the hardest part. 

If you start out with a tutorial, and it gets reviewed, then the video 
will be even better, as long as no one tries to read the tutorial out 
loud, word-for-word.
