I was trying to customize the comments section and was led to the cvs:
hook_comment [1]


It lists three possible functions for $op.  


I would have saved me much time and effort if all of the possibilities
might have been listed, especially "form."  I have also seen "validate"
and "view."  


I recommend this because so many questions are answered on the forums
by directing people to the cvs.
