Well, truth be told, Drupal is a lot more like a "kit car" geared
toward hobbyists.
Picture a bunch of backyard mechanics who buy mail order kit cars and
spend countless hours tweaking and fussing over their machines to get
them working as well as the can. Some components they even re machine
or make from scratch. But when they take their hot rods out for a
spin, others in the neighborhood see these powerful machines, drool
over them, and decide they want one, too.
But what the others in the neighborhood don't see is all the time and
energy that went into building that hot rod. They are used to going
down to the nearest dealership, plunking down a few grand for a down
payment, and driving the car off the lot ready to race. That's what
they have come to expect and they get frustrated by not being able to
get their own hot rod without some sweat and tears.
Now, the hot rodders are eager to share their work. And they are
developing a system that makes it easy for just about anyone to design
and assemble their own kit car. They are working for the day when all
anyone will need is a one-size fits all wrench and be able to step
through some simple assembly instructions. But make no mistake, it's
an extremely difficult challenge to balance the demand for a cutting
edge, top performing machine with the need for ease of assembly.
So, we're not there yet. Right now, you still need to get some grease
on your hands and you may still have to plow through some hairy
technical manuals depending on what your needs are. Sorry, that's just
the way it is at this stage of Drupal's development.
