Well PHP is not my "first language" either, but the Drupal project just
impressed the hell out of me a little over a year ago.  I am still learning
the API's but there is a ridiculous amount of power even before you get into
any development.

I had to learn to theme for myself right out of the gate.  Zen has def been
the ticket for me.
