Sam,

I just posted a little dissertation for completeness and sharing my own 
experiences with these challenges, so I'll combine the ideas from it and 
the recommendation many are posting in one line: even if you find a fix 
for the site code, if performance issues get your attention you'll be 
glad you moved up from shared hosting as well.

N.B.: In case you were tempted, cloud computing has its challenges and 
risks also by the way.
