Hey Leslie,

I have another idea for you. This assumes that the local files are available via a url. Like on a Mac the path to a file might be: file:///Users/Username/Documents/file.doc.

What you could do is simply use the Link module: http://drupal.org/project/link (requires CCK).. This would require the person adding the content to know the file path to the document instead of browsing to it.

But I'm pretty sure you could prepend the beginning part of the file-path automatically when you are configuring the link field so that people adding a link to the file would have a shorter path to insert (the usability of this also depends on how complex the file structure is on the local server).

I like the link module. It's quite configurable. But its obviously limited in that it doesn't provide a browsing widget like file upload modules do. Just brainstorming...

Leslie, it is possible/likely (???) that functionality you desire will be built right into core for Drupal 7. See this article:

http://www.advomatic.com/blogs/aaron-winborn/stream-wrappers-and-you

Possibilities that might help you now with Drupal 6, I stress maybe...

http://drupal.org/project/media_mover
http://drupal.org/project/media
http://drupal.org/project/filefield

Also, it is possible there already is an easy way to do this that is handled by a particular module I don't know about. Do let us know if you find something else that isn't mentioned here.

Good morning, everyone,
Is there a way to force Drupal to link to a document on our network file system, without actually uploading it into the Drupal database? We have hundreds of documents that we'd like to link to (this is for our employee intranet site, not an external site) rather than having to upload each one.
Thanks in advance,
Leslie
