Latest commit by the maintainer March 1 (2006) and a long issues queue lead me to believe the modules are unmaintained. I've send an email to ccourtne on Aug 13, but have not received a reply (and I don't want to wait longer).

hmm. there is file api in core, and filesystem module in development by dopry - http://drupal.org/project/filesyste,. his is intended to go into core during the next release. do we really want to encourage this one as well?
Sure give people A choice. I've used attachment and filemanager. There are probably others using it. It's not one for the orphan list I would hope.
