hmm. there is file api in core, and filesystem module in development by dopry - http://drupal.org/project/filesyste,. his is intended to go into core during the next release. do we really want to encourage this one as well?

First off, sorry, I didn't intend to reply to the devlist. I wouldn't advocate updating it for 5.0, IMHO it's better than what's provided by core in 4.6 and 4.7. There are quite a few people using the module so it should be maintained. andrew
