Are you sure ? I just tried (with Drupal 5.3) and created a new menu entry, linking to user (without slash), and *without* submenu. It doesn't appear here.
I must add: the menu item doesn't appear even when I'm logged in.
OK, I didn't read your mail very well I must say. Effectively it appears only for anonymous users. I'll try Darren's trick to have it permanently. Thanks, Xav
